Not Too Late! Here are 6 Summer Programs High Schoolers Can Still Apply For in 2025

We’re already one month into the new year! While 2025 has just begun, summer is only five months away, making this the perfect time to explore enriching opportunities. High school summer programs offer an excellent way for students to dive into subjects of interest, build academic skills, and gain valuable experience outside the traditional classroom setting. While many application deadlines have already passed, there are still great options available. Below, we’ve highlighted six summer programs with open applications, categorized by key focus areas: STEM, art/fashion/design, and writing.

STEM PROGRAMS


COSMOS - California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science

Who Can Apply: California High-School Students

Deadline: February 27 at 11:59 PM PST

Requirements: Must live on campus for the duration of the program. Its selection is competitive and the average GPA for a COSMOS student is 3.5 or above.

What: This is an intensive four-week program for high school students who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in STEM subjects. Students are to apply to ONE of the available University of California’s COSMOS campuses. Each campus builds its curriculum based on the faculty and topics but all will include challenging hands-on and lab-intensive curricula.


Texas Tech University’s Clark Scholars Program

Who Can Apply: High school juniors and seniors that graduate in 2025 or 2026 (U.S. Citizens only)

Deadline: February 24, 2025 at 11:59 PM CST

Requirements: Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by the program start date (June 22, 2025). The components of the application include but are not limited to: short essays, high school transcripts, college admissions standardized test scores, and three letters of recommendation.

What: This is an intensive seven-week summer research program for twelve highly qualified high school juniors and seniors where scholars will have hands-on practical research experience with outstanding and experienced faculty. Scholars will be given on-campus meals, room and board, and weekend activities/programming. Applicants can choose from this year’s research areas: Biology/Cellular & Microbiology, Cancer Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, History, Mechanical Engineering: Cancer Bioimaging, and Physics.  



ART/FASHION


The New School Parsons Summer Intensive Studies: New York

Who Can Apply: Domestic and international students ages 16-18

Deadline: April 24, 2025 (April 1 for international students)

Requirements: Students must be 16 years of age by the start date of the program. Students attend classes M-F for six hours a day with a one-hour break for lunch. Materials that are needed are a digital camera (mobile device cameras are suitable), supplies from class list (estimated ~$200), and some courses require access to a modern computer laptop. International students whose primary language of instruction is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency.

What: There are two sessions: June 9-27, 2025 and July 7-25, 2025. Students will study art and design with Parsons’ world-class faculty while experiencing the inspiration of New York City in a stimulating three-week, three-credit intensive program. Students will gain technical and creative skills necessary for success in future art and design programs. The following courses offered are but not limited to: Animation Studio, Architectural Design Studio, Fashion Accessories Design, Fashion: Styling, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Product Design, etc.


FIT Summer High School 10-Day Classes

Who Can Apply: Students grades 9-12 as of fall 2025

Deadline: Application opens February 12, 2025 and ends June 10, 2025

Requirements: The 10-Day classes cost $550 (Tuition = $522, Materials = $18, and Registration Fee = $10). The program also offers scholarship opportunities if students need financial support.

What: These pre college summer courses are taught by FIT professionals who will help students create competitive portfolio pieces and explore different majors. Students will experience their NYC campus in the heart of the Fashion District.


WRITING/JOURNALISM


Princeton Summer Journalism Program

Who Can Apply: Current U.S. high school juniors

Deadline: Monday, February 24, 2025

Requirements: Students must create an account and apply online. Students complete three rounds to apply for PSJP, finalists from one round will progress to the next. Students must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5, have an interest in journalism, and are students from limited-income backgrounds who are considering pursuing a career in journalism. Students must meet at least one of the socioeconomic conditions below: 

  • The combined income of your parent(s)/guardian(s) plus child support payments, if any, does not exceed $60,000.

  • Your family income or circumstances qualify you to receive free or reduced-price lunch in your high school.

  • Your family income or circumstances qualify you to receive an SAT or ACT fee waiver.

What: Students will complete a multi-week, hybrid summer intensive, which will culminate in their annual 10-day residential intensive on the Princeton University campus in New Jersey. Participants will attend online workshops and lectures with renowned journalists from all over the country throughout the month of July. Students will then attend their residential intensive, visiting Princeton and staying in undergraduate dorms, attending workshops and lectures taught by renowned educators and journalists. Students will witness journalists in action as they tour major news organizations such as The New York Times, Huffington Post, and Bloomberg. All costs to attend the residential summer institute, including air/ground transportation, housing, meals, and equipment are covered by the program!


Iowa Young Writers’ Studio

Who Can Apply: Students who are currently in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade

Deadline: Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 11:59 PM CT

Requirements: Applicants will have to submit a writing sample, statement or purpose, and a letter of recommendation from an English teacher or other writing instructor/tutor/mentor who is familiar with your writing and with you as a person. There is a $10 reading fee (goes directly to the highly-qualified writers who read and evaluate the writing samples). If the student is accepted into an in-person session, they must pay the $2,500 fee (room and board, instruction and materials, and access to extracurricular camp events). There is financial aid available for applicants who meet their need-based requirements. 

What: The program will have two sessions: June 15-18, 2025 and July 13-26, 2025. This will take place in Iowa City, Iowa on the University of Iowa campus. Each student will take one core course for the duration of the session. They may select a core core in fiction writing, poetry writing, creative writing, or TV writing and playwriting. Supplemental material and projects will allow the students to work in small groups, open mics, talent shows, etc. to give students the opportunity to connect with one another.
